Lip Flip

For the past few years, pouty and luscious lips have been a prominent pursuit in the aesthetic world. Full and youthful lips never go out of style, and if you are considering a lip augmentation, this might be the perfect procedure for you. A lip flip procedure consists of neurotoxin injections to the upper lip, in an effort to help the upper lip relax and roll slightly upward. By allowing the upper lip to relax, it allows it to be slightly more visible. This is a great alternative for any person who believes they already have naturally full lips when the face is in a resting position, but when smiling the upper lip is hyperactive and curls inwards so as to appear smaller and thinner. It is important to note that a lip flip does not actually add any volume to your lip, but rather allows your lip to appear more visible.

What is a Lip Flip procedure?

This procedure takes advantage of neurotoxin injections to help the upper lip relax and appear more visible when contracted. The goal of these neurotoxin injections is to target the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle that controls movement of the mouth and lips) and relax the part of the muscle over the upper lip that causes it to roll slightly upward. Targeting this aspect of the muscle allows for the lip to appear more voluminous and defined. This is a minimally invasive procedure that is typically only 10 minutes long, and results will last about 3 to 4 months.

Which neurotoxins are used for this procedure?

Any type of neurotoxin can be used for a lip flip. The popular brands of neurotoxin include: Botox, Xeomin, Jeaveua, and Dysport. More information about these neurotoxins and their similarities and differences can be found under the Neurotoxin section of this website.

Procedure overview

Before starting you procedure, your health history will be assessed based on known allergies, medical conditions, or contraindications to potential neurotoxins, prior neurotoxin, facial surgery, trauma history. This is typically a quick and painless procedure and is considered less invasive than other alternatives. We ask you not to wear any makeup (or at least not wear any lipstick) to ensure accurate documentation of before and after photos, as well as to ensure sterility. Most patients describe this procedure as pretty painless, as topical lidocaine will be applied for proper numbing. The injections itself will last about 10 minutes.

Am I a good candidate?

Generally, a good candidate is any healthy individual who believes they already have naturally full lips but that these full lips are no longer visible upon smiling. Furthermore, a good candidate is someone who would like a subtle but more prominent pout. The most important aspect to consider is that a lip flip will not and cannot add additional volume to your lips, it can only bring out the volume you already have.

Are Lip Flips safe?

This procedure is considered very safe with minimal risk of complications. Furthermore, it can also be done quickly with just a few injections sites of neurotoxins.

Downtime, results, and follow-ups

There are is no downtime associated with lip flips and you can return back to doing your daily routine as soon as you step out of office! However, a side effect patients often complain about post procedure is their lip feeling numb for a short while and not being able to eat and drink properly. This can be a possible a side effect and downtime, however, this will only occur if too much neurotoxin has been injected into the orbicularis oris muscle. An experienced injector like Dr. Kay will know the perfect number of units that will best suit you.
