Kybella, also known as deoxycholic acid, is an injectable designed to kill fat cells in areas like the double chin, jowls, stomach, arms, and banana roll.
Kybella’s active ingredient, synthetic deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of stubborn fat cells. Within 4-6 weeks Kybella patients should notice a reduction in areas like the chin and jawline. Kybella permanently stops fat from accumulating again in the future once the area has been treated. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not necessary once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.
You should not be treated with Kybella if you are allergic to deoxycholic acid, or if you have an infection around the area to be treated. Patients with a big event like a wedding or graduation should schedule at least one month in advance.
Most patients will experience some swelling or bruising following their treatment. In some cases, more serious reactions like trouble swallowing or a rash can occur. For a list of Kybella’s side effects click here.Â
The FDA first approved Kybella for use in the submental region in 2015. adults with moderate or severe fat below the chin, or submental fat. Treating areas like the banana roll or stomach are considered off-label and not approved by the FDA. Dr.
Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. An experienced injector will help determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Each Kybella treatment session is given at least 1 month apart and you should not receive more than 6 treatments. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received 6 treatments.
The results from Kybella are permanent. Any area treated with Kybella is unable to produce fat once it has been treated.
