Jawline Filler

A defined jawline gives strength, character and beauty to the face. The jawline elegantly enhances the face and gives a distinctive border between the face and neck. Non-surgical interventions with injectable fillers such as hyaluronic acid fillers and non-hyaluronic acid fillers are an excellent tool for beauty enhancement and rejuvenation of lower face aging changes. The use of fillers to improve jawline projection and reduce jowl heaviness has become more popular as more people are seeking the means to combat signs of facial aging.

This procedure is ideal for anyone who wishes to have that sculpted and chiseled supermodel look. Dr. Kay’s extensive anatomical knowledge in combination with her artistic eye will be able to help you find your perfect angles and golden ratio!

What is a Jawline filler procedure?

This is a minimally invasive procedure performed with fillers like Radiese and Restylane. Calcium based fillers like Radiesse are Dr. Kay’s preferred filler for the jawline. Radiesse can be injected in a way that mimics the bone structure of the mandible to increase projection and structure. Jawline filler can also be used to address signs of aging such as: fat atrophy, dermal collagen break down, and or subcutaneous volume loss. Each procedure is typically only about 15 minutes long and will yield instant results that will last anywhere between 6 months to 18 months (depending on which filler you and Dr. Kay decide on).

Which fillers are used for this procedure?

There are typically two different types of fillers that can be used for jawline sculpting: hyaluronic acid based and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers. Both Radiesse and Restylane have varying properties and may not be suitable for some patients and the outcomes they desire.

Dr. Kay frequently uses hyaluronic acid based fillers for patients seeking a more defined profile. HA fillers are 100% reversible. This makes fillers like Restylane ideal for anyone that is unsure or concerned about the end results. As the effects of these fillers can be easily reversible their shorter longevity of 6 to 12 months make it better for first time patients who are on the fence about getting the procedure. Any patient seeking moderate soft filler augmentation would benefit most from HA fillers because they are typically thinner and softer than calcium hydroxylapatite fillers.

Calcium based fillers like Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatie) help to achieve more robust augmented facial features because of their thicker nature, ability to mimic bone density, and ability to stimulate new collagen growth after injection. Therefore, this is typically best for patients who are more comfortable with dermal filler injections and who wish to have a more sculpted look.

The collagen stimulating properties of Radiesse help this filler build long-term results. Radiesse lasts 12-18 months depending on the patient and how their body metabolizes the filler.

Procedure overview

Before we begin, We’ll ask you a few questions regarding your health history. Be prepared to answer questions related to allergies, medical conditions, or previous adverse reactions to any injectables. It’s important to let us know if you have had filler in the past, facial surgery, trauma, or a history of implants.

Jawline sculpting with Dr. Kay is usually a quick procedure with minimal discomfort. Try not to wear makeup on the day of your appointment or avoid applying makeup to the jawline area. This helps us assess the area and accurately document prior to Dr. Kay injecting. Most patients describe this procedure as pretty painless, as topical lidocaine will be applied for proper numbing. Jawline filler usually takes 15-20 minutes depending on the patient and overall treatment plan.

Am I a good candidate?

Generally, a good candidate is any healthy individual who wishes to seek lower face sculpting but has not had any facial surgery or trauma and does not have any filler already placed in the area of interest.

Is Jawline filler safe?

This procedure is generally regarded as a safe procedure with very minimal risk of complications. This area of the face is relatively safer to inject than other parts of the face, as there are less vessels here. However, because the anatomy is still complex and contains other danger zones, these injections still need to be administered by an experienced and qualified injector. Nonetheless, the risks associated with this procedure are still much more minimal than other alternatives. Results can be reversible if you choose to get a hyaluronic acid based filler.

Downtime, results, and follow-ups

Jawline filler is especially great for individuals with fast and busy lives, as this procedure can produce instant results while still allowing you to return to your normal activities and work flow immediately after the procedure. The most common side effect of these injections is bruising; the extent or a bruising varies on a person to person basis and medication will be given to ease it. This bruising can persist for up to 2 weeks, and after these 2 weeks is when you should see your optimal results. You are free to book a complimentary follow up appointment within these 2 weeks if you are unsatisfied with your result or think you would benefit from a small touch up.

How should I prepare for Jawline filler?

Before coming in to receive your treatment, you should follow these pre-procedure instructions to minimize the risks of adverse reactions:

  • Avoid alcohol, as it may increase your risk of bruising
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood-thinning medications 2 weeks in advance if possible, as these can increase your risk of swelling and bruising (Aspirin, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDs).
  • Avoid coming in with makeup or be prepared to remove it.
  • We recommend scheduling your appointment with Dr. Kay about two weeks prior to any special events. This will ensure you have healed and any swelling or bruising has gone down.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well before your appointment.

Post operative care

Although there is no downtime, and you can return to your normal activities, it is important to follow these post-treatment instructions in order to maximize the results and avoid complications:

  • Ice area for the first day for 30 min. Ice is helpful every 2 hours for 30 min at a time. 2 – 3 times a day is plenty.
  • Light aerobic exercises only for the first two days post-treatment.
  • Avoid saunas — minimal sweating recommended.
  • Gently massage any visual lumps or nodules daily for a week.
  • Avoid salty foods and alcohol during the first two weeks post-treatment.
