Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injection is a non invasive procedure aiming at promoting the healing of damaged tissue and the growth of new healthy cells. PRP injections can be done for multiple purposes. PRP can be injected to the scalp to promote hair growth and thickening and prevent hair loss. PRP injection can be injected to injured tendons to stimulate the healing process. PRP injection has been found as a solution for many other problems such as osteoarthritis, postsurgical healing, and cut wounds.
PRP is a natural substance found in blood. A sample of blood will be drawn from the patients; the amount depends on the area of treatment. Then, the blood is put in a centrifuge to spin it at high speed; that will separate the blood to two layers:
The top layer (plasma) might be placed in a centrifuge again to concentrate the platelets. Then the PRP can be injected to the area of concern. The most common areas of treatment are the scalp for hair growth and tendons for faster healing. PRP is usually applied to the face with microneedling to stimulate collagen production and healing. Finally, occlusive dressing may be applied to treated areas if necessary.

Length of a platelet rich plasma therapy session depends on the extent of hair loss / tissue injury, but generally takes one to two hours. Most patients need PRP therapy several times to achieve desired results. Others may only require PRP therapy once or twice a year.
Every cosmetic procedure comes with some side effects and risks. PRP injections commonly cause skin irritation immediately after the procedure with redness that might last for 2-4 days. Minor bleeding is not very common, but possible. Reach out to the provider in case of severe side effects such as infection, never injuries, and pain.
There is no downtime associated with PRP therapy because no foreign substances are used. Daily activities may be resumed after treatment, but resting is highly recommended.
