Skin Cancer Awareness Month

SPF Is the Main Character: Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and this is your reminder that sunscreen is not optional. It is skincare. It is anti-aging care. It is glow protection. It is the final step in your morning routine that protects all the work your serums, moisturizers, treatments, and facials are doing for your skin.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and current estimates show that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. That statistic should make all of us pause, especially if we love bright skin, smooth texture, even tone, and long-term facial rejuvenation.

The good news is that daily sun protection makes a difference. You do not need to hide indoors. You need smarter beauty habits.

Your SPF Era Starts Now

We love a bronzed glow, but we do not love UV damage.

Sun exposure contributes to brown spots, redness, collagen breakdown, fine lines, crepey texture, and skin cancer risk. UVA rays are linked with premature aging. UVB rays are linked with burning. Both matter.

That is why your morning skincare routine should end with a broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for daily use, and SPF 50 or higher for extended outdoor activity. Reapplication every two hours is recommended, especially after sweating or swimming.

For an easy everyday option, start with KD Skin Sun Serum SPF 50. It is designed to feel lightweight, wear well under makeup, and provide SPF 50 protection while helping the skin feel hydrated and fresh.

Pick Your Sunscreen Personality

Your sunscreen should fit your skin type, your makeup routine, and your lifestyle. If it feels heavy or chalky, you will not use it consistently. Choose the one you will actually wear.

For a sheer mineral option, try Clear Sheer Antioxidant Sunscreen. This SPF 50 mineral sunscreen is described as quick-absorbing, sheer, non-comedogenic, and formulated with antioxidants for added free radical support.

For a soft tinted glow, try Mineral Glow Sun Defense. This water-resistant physical mineral sunscreen has a sheer universal tint and uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect against UVA and UVB rays.

For a moisturizing sunscreen that works well under makeup, try Aqua Shield Moisturizing Sunscreen. It includes micronized zinc oxide, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, cucumber, and squalane to support hydration while protecting the skin.

Your Girly SPF Checklist

Keep sunscreen where you actually need it: your bathroom counter, purse, car, gym bag, beach tote, and office drawer.

Your daily checklist:

  • Apply SPF as the last step in your morning skincare routine.

  • Use enough product to cover your face, neck, chest, ears, and hands.

  • Reapply every two hours when outdoors.

  • Reapply after sweating, swimming, or towel drying.

  • Add sunglasses, hats, and shade when the UV index is high.

The CDC recommends shade, protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen when the UV index is 3 or higher.

Do Not Forget the Pretty Little Places

The most commonly missed areas are often the places that show aging first.

Think about your:

  • Neck

  • Chest

  • Ears

  • Hairline

  • Hands

  • Tops of the feet

  • Around the eyes

  • Lips

Your hands, neck, and chest receive sun exposure during driving, walking, errands, and patio lunches. These areas need the same attention as your face.

Pair your SPF with Deep Blue Hydration Serum when your skin feels dry, tight, or dull. This hyaluronic acid serum is designed to support hydration and a smoother-looking complexion.

At night, support your barrier with Night Quench, a ceramide-rich moisturizer created to nourish dry skin and support barrier repair and lipid replenishment.

Bright Skin Still Needs Protection

If you are using brightening products, retinoids, exfoliating acids, or in-office treatments, SPF matters even more. These products help improve tone and texture, but unprotected sun exposure works against your results.

For daytime antioxidant support, layer Brighten & Tighten Vitamin C Serum under your SPF. It is formulated to support improved texture and tone with a time-release delivery system.

If brown spots or uneven tone are your concern, add Pigment Perfector into your routine. It features glutathione and rose to support a brighter, more even-looking complexion.

For collagen and bounce, Liquid Line Refine supports collagen and elastin synthesis with ingredients including copper, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide complex.

Tanning Beds Are Not Cute

A tan fades. UV damage stays.

Tanning beds, booths, sunlamps, and other artificial UV sources increase skin cancer risk and contribute to premature aging. If you want a bronzed look, choose sunless tanner instead. Your future skin will be smoother, brighter, and healthier for it.

Check Your Skin Like You Check Your Makeup

Skin Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to look at your skin more closely.

Check for:

  • A new mole or spot

  • A spot that is changing

  • A mole that looks different from your others

  • A spot that bleeds, itches, crusts, or does not heal

  • A mole with asymmetry, irregular borders, multiple colors, or rapid growth

If something looks different, book an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist. Do not wait for a spot to become painful. Skin checks are part of beauty maintenance, longevity care, and medical prevention.

Your May Glow Plan

This month, make sun protection part of your beauty identity.

Use your SPF every morning. Reapply when you are outdoors. Protect your neck, chest, hands, and lips. Wear the hat. Sit in the shade. Book your annual skin check.

Your glow should last longer than one summer.
